Kingston and Surbiton Area Guide
Kingston Upon Thames is a vibrant suburb with a rich history and a shopping centre to rival central London just 12 miles away. Once an ancient market town where Saxon kings were crowned, it is the second smallest London Borough after the City of London and one of only four Royal Boroughs in England and Wales.
With its genuinely historic and much loved market place, leisure facilities including the famous Rose Theatre, restaurants and relaxed café scene, Kingston is ideal for students, families and anyone who is young at heart. It has one of the most scenic stretches of the River Thames, with walks and cycle routes to nearby Hampton Court and Richmond. With miles of the picturesque River Thames to enjoy, Kingston is perfectly placed for walking, running or cycling, as well as relaxing at the many riverside pubs and restaurants. It is only 25 minutes to London Waterloo from Kingston main line station and eight miles to the M25. Education in the area is renowned for its excellence and Kingston is home to a leading London University, with its campus and building set in and around the centre.
Next door to Kingston is Surbiton also in south-west London and sitting on the Surrey, or southern bank, of the Thames. Only 15 minutes to Waterloo station from Surbiton main line station, this commute into London is one of the quickest in the area. It has good roads and squares of large Victorian houses and cottages, a plentiful supply of Twenties and Thirties detached and semi-detached houses and affordable flats in converted houses or purpose-built blocks.
Surbiton became a famous name due to the Seventies TV sitcom The Good Life, starring Felicity Kendal and Richard Briers who were attempting to become self-sufficient from their suburban back garden.
